Deviantart, you're F****NG AWESOMESo I got both a DD and a Facebook feature for my LA piece yesterday, and it finally just hit me how amazing this place is. All the love and support I've gotten here is mind-boggling to me. I would even go as far as to say that it's made my career. This is where I found my "audience", my first industry connections, fellow artist friends etc. This is where I first saw Dan LuVisi's King Kong piece and stared at it in awe for hours, and then had my mind blown the day I found out that both him and Rahll (Reid Southen) knew who I was! I mean, these were guys I was idolizing like fucking movie stars, and today I consider these guys to be good friends, even though I still havne't met either of them.. (I think they're just intimidated by me sexually.) But anyway, I always knew I could draw, based on the reactions from people around me, but I also always considered myself a complete nobody. Shepard Fairey - - CRIMINAL.Shepard Fairey, the artist responsible for the Obama "Hope" poster that contributed so importantly to Obama achieving the presidency of the United States four years ago, plead guilty today to criminal contempt in charges that came from his manipulating evidence in a lawsuit brought against him for using an AP photograph as a reference for the "Hope" poster.  Shepard Fairey was sentenced to two years of probation and 300 hours of community service.

On January 24th, 2012, we released an #hq journal regarding Popular results for Browse. In this journal, we described Fair Exposure -- deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results.  Fair Exposure's goal is to showcase the most popular deviations in a variety of styles, genres, and art forms, without bias towards a particular topic.
Since the release of our Fair Exposure announcement, especially in the last handful of weeks, we've noticed a concerted, dedicated effort made by deviants, or groups of deviants, to specifically beat (or "game") the system.  Deviations have been intentionally miscategorized in hopes of having them appear "higher" in Popular results.  This has, rightfully so, resulted in complaints from deviants who submit to deviantART in a fair and honest manner.

FAQ Revamp Pt 4: Prints FAQ MergerHi Everyone!!!
While we didn't get any extra time to focus on updating FAQs this week, we did see a major improvement launch on the Help & FAQ page. We are pleased to announce that the Prints FAQ is no longer separated from the Main FAQ!!! Prior to this change in order to even begin searching for Prints related information you had to click on the Prints section and then you would have the ability to search by keywords for anything related to Prints. To eliminate this problem the Prints FAQ has been merged into the main FAQ system. You can now type in print related keywords into the main FAQ and find all the information you need.
Please note nothing has changed in terms of the organization of the Prints FAQ everything should visually look the same, the only change is that the Main FAQ Search is now able to locate the Prints FAQs.

DeviantArt (hello, again)It's been over five years since I posted anything on my DeviantArt page. As my popularity and abilities grew, I guess I had out grown the platform. But as I kept growing, it seems like DA has been growing too, and after several conversations with the staff, it became apparent that it was in my best interest to rebuild and maintain my presence here. So I'm back.
As time goes on I'll elaborate more on this decision, but lets start by giving a hand to the artists and the staff for doing good and keeping things going. It's far from a perfect system, but what on this forsaken planet is?

Cutting Edge Prints, Week 09/12
Sometimes, the Helicopters Come After YouThis weekend was rather eventful.  Being a beautiful weekend in LA (sunny and 75) I decided to go for a long hike in Griffith Park.  I strapped up with about a 20 pound pack and headed off from my apartment, which is a the foot of Griffith Park, and headed for the hills.  I'm taking a mountaineering class this spring so I have been doing some conditioning to get ready for longer, multi-day trips that I'll be taking.  My goal for the hike was to get in some milage but I had no specific destination in mind.
After doing some big loops and stopping for lunch, I set off north for the highest peaks in the park, hoping to catch some sweet afternoon views of LA.  I got to the northern ridge and kept on going west along the ridge toward the Hollywood Sign.  This deep into the park, there are far fewer people than close to the trailheads, so it felt *somewhat* like the wilderness.  I was enjoying this so much that I continued west, and suddenly realized that I
DEVIANT ART MEETS MIAMII had the pleasure of attending the DA meet in Miami yesterday.  DA did a nice job of displaying works of many artists, photographers, sculptures, etc. There was an muro/wacom artist there whose name is Forest Stearns (DRAWEVERYWHERE is his da name).  He is a very talented, enthusiastic, and engaging  artist. He did a little question and answer bit, and then an example of how he works. Very interesting. DA also had a lot of handouts, such as a goodie bag, stickers, keychains, posters, etc.  There was a nice turnout for the event, lots of young anime artists and many photographers.
Every year for the past 10 years there is an event called ART BASAL in Miami. Artwork in every possible medium is displayed all around town. It is a virtual feast for the eyes. I've begun to read through this all since I want to write and draw my own comic and it looks like more work than I was expecting.

When it comes to the actual drawing part, does the industry prefer it to be done traditionally or is Digitally accepted too?

The industry's come a long way in this regard. It's about the quality of the artwork, not what medium you're using. If you look at high quality published books you'll see a wide variety of styles and approaches. It doesn't matter whether it's traditional or digital, just that the final output is professional quality and appropriate to the project you're pitching.

Well that's good to know. Traditionally with pencil and ink I'm not that good however with my stylus and tablet I can get it done. And sometimes people tell me that publishers expected a traditionally inked piece and I wasn't sure if that was a fact or made up rumor.
